Who makes WorkClient and why, how the articles are written, what the app honestly does, and where to write if you find a mistake.

About the app

WorkClient is made by Grigory UX (Grigory Kurkan), founder of the international IT agency UXCODE. The agency has worked with clients from different countries for five years: more than forty large projects behind it, among the clients ClassPass, Depop, NUR.KZ and Aldo Coppola. There are about fifteen people on the team, and all of them have been fully remote for three years now.

The app was put together over five years, first of all for ourselves. Nothing on the market covered time tracking, calls with a summary, a board, documents and a project page for the client at once. We had to keep dozens of apps and pay for every one of them: a clipboard manager and a notes app alone cost 20–30 dollars a month per person.

Why it exists

Three problems the app grew out of.

A timer that counts more than it should. A person falls asleep or goes for a walk while the timer keeps running, and those hours end up on the invoice. From what we have seen in the agency, contractors on hourly work spent about 20% of paid time on something else and another 10% on a forgotten timer. That is where the auto-pause and the smart timer came from.

Calls after which everything is lost. Without a record the agreements disappeared, and plugins for Google Meet, Zoom and Telemost lost half of what was said. Now the summary of the conversation, the tasks and the notes sit on the client page, and tasks from the call go onto the board.

A client who needs to see the status. Grigory is both a client and a contractor: he hands work to the team and orders parts of it from subcontractors. Nobody enjoys pinging people instead of opening a page and seeing what is done. That is how the project page for the client appeared.

The app is in open development. Updates ship several times a week, the list of changes is on the version history page. Everything is free right now: the tiers are announced, payment is not switched on.

What the app does

  • A timer per project and up to three timers at once: a call, revisions and layout run in parallel.
  • Auto-pause after three minutes without mouse or keyboard. After a long break the app asks what to do with that time.
  • Projects, tasks, a kanban and a board for every project.
  • Hourly and fixed pricing in one project, an invoice built from the hours you worked, an earnings counter in the header.
  • A project page for the client by link: no sign-up, with an optional PIN.
  • Calls inside the app window; the guest joins by link, and afterwards a summary and tasks are left behind.
  • Clipboard history, notes by the notch, time and earnings in the menu bar.

Honest limits

  • macOS only, Apple Silicon and Intel. There is no Windows and no phone app.
  • The build is not signed by Apple yet. On the first launch macOS will ask you to allow the app by hand, and the Accessibility permission is reset after every update. That is a known cost and it is being worked on.
  • Island notes do not sync between computers.

First launch

macOS will warn you that the app has not been checked by Apple. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security. At the bottom of the Security section an “Open Anyway” button appears. It stays there for about an hour after the first attempt to launch.

If the system says the app “is damaged and can’t be opened”, remove the quarantine flag in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/WorkClient.app. After that the app opens normally.

Who writes the articles

The articles are written by Grigory UX, from the agency’s experience and his own work with clients. Drafts are prepared with the help of AI tools, the author edits them by hand and answers for every fact. Facts about the app are checked against its documentation and release notes. English articles are localisations with their own sources and examples, not machine translations of the Russian ones. We fix mistakes: write to the WorkClient bot on Telegram.

Editorial policy

  • Every article is useful without WorkClient: the method is described for a spreadsheet or any other tool.
  • The product is mentioned once in the body, one screenshot, one block at the end.
  • Competitor prices carry the date they were checked. Laws carry the number and the date.
  • There are no testimonials and no client logos on the site, because there are none yet.
  • Every page carries the date it was updated; articles are reviewed quarterly.
  • Screenshots come from the app; where the data is made up, the caption says “demo data”. They were taken with the Russian interface; the app itself also runs in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
